Know-your-skis Wednesday on Dailyskier.com This photo could have been taken at virtually any ski-making factory but happens to be from Atomic in Altenmarkt im Pongau, Austria. Meet Nomex ® honeycomb aramid core that is to be found inside virtually every pair of true racing skis ( except for Madshus- they use a different material ) Nomex is a veteran - DuPont started selling it at the end of 1960s, although back then it was used in fancy applications such an aerospace industry. It found its way into racing ski construction in 1980s and continues to dominate, as already mentioned: nothing provides comparable strength to weight ratio. True Nomex ® is expensive and is only used in top models - cheaper skis get similarly constructed knock-offs. It will continue to underpin…

Man To Watch: Irineu Esteve Altimiras

Newsfeed
Irineu Esteve Altimiras won the Sportful Grand Prix race on weekend. And not just won: the list of competitors he managed to beat on 9.5k uphill distance reads like " who is who in men's skiing elite 2019" ( sans Norwegians, admittedly - they rarely run continental races in general) A 23 year old Andorran has decisively beaten such names as Alex Bolshunov, Francesco Di Fabiani, Denis Spitsov, Alexey Chervotkin to name but a few. It's just a rollerski training exercise, no big deal, many would say. True, perhaps. When Ireneu came third at 15k F at U23 in Soldier Hollow , right behind - guess who? Bolshunov, Chervotkin and Spitsov - many also called it a fluke and not a big deal. " We don't have enough space in…

IOC Cuts Teams Sizes For Olympics. Time To Consider Change Of Allegiance?

Newsfeed
Bad news for Swedish female skiers. Ditto for the Russian males. But the much the worst for the Norwegians of both genders: The IOC rather severely cut the quota for participation in the 2022 Olympics. If in Korea 2018 the teams in cross country skiing were supposed to have no more than 20 athletes, in China in two and half years time it will be reduced to 16 total, 8 girls and 8 boys. Which is really tight for 6 events for each but that's a different story. The one we want to raise and debate today is called " change of allegiance". We all know that some counntries produce talents in excess e.g. Brazilian footballers, Chinese table tennis players or long-distance runners from Kenya. It became a norm for…

Calle Halfvarsson Changes Manager Less Than Three Months Before Season Kick-Off

Leaders, Newsfeed
He's kinda done it again. Less than 3 months to go to the World Cup season's kick off in Ruka (his favorite), Sweden's strongest male skier suddenly parted ways with his personal manager. Halfvarsson and Bo Johansson worked together for only about a year, Aftonbladet reports He still trains under Mattias Nilsson who is both Calle personal coach and that of the national team - they do have interesting arrangements in Swedish skiing, has to be said. No idea if directly related, but the sudden change in Team Calle comes against a background of series of resignations/dismissals in the national team , including that of Jonas Peterson who served as the national team manager only for four months.

Northug & Co Rule TV Ratings In Norway

Northug & Co Rule TV Ratings In Norway

No offence to the rest of the show cast but it's magnetic charm of Petter Northug that attracts audiences. Aired last night on TV2 Norway, Landskampen show that pitted some of the top stars of Norwegian skiing and biathlon against their Swedish counterparts was a runaway success. 40% share of the national audience in primetime is something television bosses and advertizers/sponsors dream about. In case you've forgotten: modern cross country skiing runs on money from television & sponsors. It's essential for all involved to build best athletes into objects of adoration and to keep public interest in them on top level throughout the year. It's a death knell for business that underpins the system, to win the world championship and then to disappear into remote training camp till the next…
