La Transju - cancelled. No snow. Tartu Ski Marathon - cancelled. " Exceptionally mild winter in Estonia ". Finlandia-Hiihto, country's premier mass race is not happening for the first time since inception almost 50 years ago. Those are not your local get-togethers - folks train for them specifically, book plane tickets and hotels to attend ( those tend to be NON-cancellable, alas). It might be a bump the sport would get over with a shrug, but somehow we feel that it's the last component of a " perfect storm" : General diminishing interest towards cross country skiing by the younger generation plus overstocking by retailers who's margins are squeezed by online giants - and now cancellation of premier events that underpin sales in mid to top shelf sector... We hope…

With Victory In Falun Linn Svahn Leaves Mark In History

With Victory In Falun Linn Svahn Leaves Mark In History

Newsfeed
It sounds mind-blowing but bare two months ago even World Cup teams' coaches - and reporters - did not know how Linn's last name is spelled and, upon hearing it, were wondering if she's related to Gunde Svan. Fast forward to Febrauary and marvel along with us: Svahn who turned 20 only in December has already earned her place in history of skiing: three individual World Cup victories out of seven starts in total! Curvy & fast track (Falun), altitude (Davos) or flat city (Dresden), skate or classic - seemingly makes no difference. Linn is tactically savvy and probably has fastest finish in the world in 2020. No other prodigy, not even Klaebo or Bolshunov had such a record at the their 20. Add two golds Svahn already won this…

SNS Pilot Not Dead. New Top Boots In Works?

Gear News, Newsfeed
Dear SNS Pilot fans - we think of you. Your favorite standard of bindings was possibly, even likely superior - at least in certain trail conditions. But it lost in marketing wars. So,if you are on the market for race-level SNS boots in 2020, you'd have look fairly hard for remaining stock of Salomon S/LAB Carbon beauties that came out with switchable SNS/NNN plates (but good luck finding any) You'd probably have to settle for the second line: Salomon S / Race Skate Plus 19/20 edition or far less common Spine Matrix Carbon Pro. Both are great boots by the standards of , say, 2015 - but let's face it, you might experience a bit of inferiority complex looking at your buddies who all invested their hard-earned buck into newest…

Coronavirus Starts Wrecking Havoc In Beijing Olympics Preps

Gear News, Newsfeed
The Olympic Games in Beijing are not to kick off for another two years but the major medal contenders' preparations are in full swing always already. Or were meant to be. The formula is as follows: exactly two years ahead a team of the most experienced and thorough waxers departs for extended tests carrying literally hundreds of pairs of skis: every possible combination of grind and wax needs to be tried. Nobody could guarantee that the weather will be the same during the actual event, but there is a bigger chance hitting it right in the same week of the year. Different courses/ distanced require different tests. The job therefore is long, arduous and painstaking- but needs to be done of a) the team wants to win b)can afford such…

Alex Bolshunov – New Face Of Swix . And That’s Bigger Deal Than You Think

Newsfeed
Alex Bolshunov is a face of Swix' new line of eco-friendly waxes. It's quite a big deal, actually. And Swix representative who specifically pointed it out to us also seem to think so. With all the rumors, conversations, accusations swirling around the Russian skiers since about 2016, it's a bold step for one of the worldwide leaders in xcski industry to choose a Russian - any Russian - to be the face of their international promo campaign. Of course, Bolshunov was a teenager during the Sochi Olympics and nobody ever suggested any impropriety on his part - but for some he is " guilty by association" . Our message box here at Dailyskier.com has quite a few of angry letters demanding "all Russians be banned!" ( and all Norwegians too,…
