Oberstdorf 2021 so far was/ is about temperatures changing from minus 3 Celsius to plus 15 C. (Plus the rain on Saturday morning) Add that half of the course is more or less firmly in the shade while the other half is exposed to the sun. Then remind yourself that Skiathlon at Oberstdorf is about preparing both classic and skating skis. Then you shall fully comprehend that the race on Saturday is the test of ski specialist mettle like probably never before. Daily Skier At Oberstdorf Meet Stars Of Tomorrow

We all want to look into the future. When it comes to the future of skiing - it's already here, in Oberstdorf. No secret that elite athlete's training changed a lot in the last decade. Back in 2011 a picture of a female skier doing a set of pull-ups with weights chained to her legs would baffle, perhaps horrify any coach - now it's a routine. Champions become stronger, more coordinated - and younger. It's not like young talents never made it to the World Championships: a 18 year old Yelena Vyalbe came to the one held in 1987 (also in Oberstdorf) and a 18 year old Therese Johaug even won a medal at her debut. The difference is, back then teenagers were expected to grow and mature through the…

Daily Skier At Oberstdorf 2021: Russia In Camouflage

Newsfeed, Trivia
Not sure anyone would even understand what's going on were she/ he to be shown the photo we put in the headline a mere year ago. Let us help you to decipher: [caption id="attachment_17939" align="alignnone" width="1527"] Two Russian skiers, wearing FFP2 masks, that are compulsory in Bavaria, pass by the camouflaged Russian wax truck at the Oberstdorf World Championships [/caption] FFP2 masks are compulsory for everyone and everywhere at the championships - with a notable exception of actual athletes on the tracks, both training and competing. Camouflage on the Russian trucks and vans is a different story: according to the recent decision by the Court of Arbitration in Sports (CAS), Russian athletes could take part in the world championships but the country's flag, the coat-of-arms, the anthem and even the…

Hot Kinda Skiing In Oberstdorf

Newsfeed, Trivia
It's +13 Celsius in Oberstdorf. Some even say + 15, but who counts when it's that balmy, right? Oh, and you've got race starts close to midday. And roughly half the distance exposed to sunshine and half in a shade. So it's going to be a lot of fun for ski waxing specialists, little doubt there. Meanwhile, the main actors of the upcoming Oberstdorf 2021 look kinda chill. Some have already started to strip down... [caption id="attachment_17903" align="alignnone" width="1778"] There's unwritten rule that French (male) skiers start stripping down first: cue Richard Jouve and Renaud Jay...[/caption] [caption id="attachment_17902" align="alignnone" width="1920"] Maicol Rastelli of Italy is not far behind...[/caption] [caption id="attachment_17901" align="alignnone" width="1494"] Ditto for Denis Spitsov of Russia. Note that Sergey Ardashev who just came from frosty Vuokatti prefers to keep…

Veronika Stepanova, 20 and Evgeniya Krupitskaya, 18 are last - second inclusions into the Russian line-up for the FIS World Championships in Oberstdorf. Stepanova was on " international radar " ever since she battled Helene Fossesholm in 4 × 3.3k relay at the World Juniors in Lahti in 2019, both barely 18 then. At the recent JWSC 21 in Vuokatti the native of faraway Kamchatka came 4th in Sprint, decisively won 5k F and battled Moa Hansson of Sweden for the victory till the last meters of the relay. Krupitskaya was the member of the same relay squad, won silver in 5k F and came 4th in 15k mass- start. Yelena Vyalbe, a maverick boss of the Russian skiing, is known to openly criticise what she sees as sub-effort by…
