Yes, the International Ski Federation Congress in Pattaya, Thailand due to kick off in 8 weeks is still on. Possibly, the last international event with 1000+ participants in the foreseeable future. It might be just a formality - yet still the fact worth noting and, some would say, symbolic. It was meant to be a special one: after 22 years as the FIS President Gian-Franco Kasper was going to retire with the Congress choosing his replacement. A new boss of international snow sports would only become fifth helmsman in more than a century of the FIS existence. The most prestigious place is, arguably, the one on headgear - at the risk of stating the obvious, that what's gets to be seen the most on TV. The Scandinavians and the Russians firmly reserve that place for the team's overall top sponsor, so all the skiers wear identical hats and headbands. The " Continentals" and the North Americans have different traditions - that's the place reserved for an athlete's individual sponsor. One sunny morning (that happened to be yesterday) the reigning world champion in 50k Hans Christer Holund got on his skis and went for a training session. That went on for 204.3 kilometers. For an average pace of 3.21 min/ km. If that does not impress a skier in you - nothing ever will! Hans Christer wasn't alone - a club-mate Johan Tjelle was skiing along and did the same distance. Both run for the metropolitan Lyn Sport club, Norway's strongest. Tjelle is nothing like a "weekend warrior" himself - in fact, he's currently 59th in the FIS Distance ratings (Holund is 4th).
