(Some Of ) Most Exotic Innovations In Cross Country Skiing

Trivia
..Once in a while there is a new invention, some exotic device that is meant to give a skier that much talked about "winning margin". Most of those invention have come and gone. Some, however, could be purchased if you really wish so. Here is our selection of the most outstanding ones: 1.Nordic Torpedo. Glide Wax Testing Tool 'Traditional race ski selection glide-out tests are time consuming and generally not cool'. That must have been the logic behind invention of something called Nordic Torpedo. The device has Ultra High Molecular Weight polyethylene-covered surface, similar to real skis – except that it's used on four sides. The idea is simple and quite elegant: instead of waxing up four pairs of skis for for glide-out , you wax four sides of single…

Know-How From Sweden: Executive Ski Club For True Achievers

Know-How From Sweden: Executive Ski Club For True Achievers

Training & Outfitting
Cross country skiing is changing and evolving. It's no longer the sport practiced in faraway snow wilderness by a few of "the strong silent type". We all got used in the last couple of decades to snowcat-groomed trails, warm changing rooms – even to pasta-parties at the finish line. What did not change – and never will – is that cross country skiing more than any other sport demands determination, strong will, character to overcome difficulties, ability to shut that lazy man inside yourself. Plus careful preparations and good tactics. ...Wait a second, isn't that a set of essential qualities straight out of "How to Become a Successful Executive" book? That must have crossed Swedish entrepreneur and top amateur athlete (11 Vasaloppets, 4 Marcialongas and 2 IronMan races) Fredrik Erixon's…

Rollerski Manufacturers Reveal Truth About Ball Bearings

Rollerski Manufacturers Reveal Truth About Ball Bearings

Gear News, Newsfeed
Manufacturers today offer a vast choice of rollerskis to suit any taste and purse. Relative advantages of aluminum frames vs carbon laminated vs carbon monocoque are hotly debated. Ditto for rubber vs PU wheels. There is one thing, however, that all modern rollerskis have in common – ball-bearings. The 608 series ball-bearings are de-facto standard for all “summer skis” ( and beyond). We reached to several leading rollerski producers with two questions; 1. what ball-bearings do you use in production of your rollerskis and based on what criteria did you choose them over the others? 2. in the ideal world, when/if money is not an object, what ball-bearings would you recommend? Marcos Ruperez, Quionne 1. We use reliable bearings with no matter that much about velocity. Why? because what is…

Butter Your Toast With Sundby Or How Skiing Remains So Popular In Norway

Butter Your Toast With Sundby Or How Skiing Remains So Popular In Norway

Money & Finance, Newsfeed
...I've managed to butter 8 toasts before Martin Johnsrud Sundby made a sudden appearance and destroyed my effort. It was no better with Niklas Dyrhaug either. For some reason, it was much easier to deal with Emil Iversen and I've got no less than 15 toasts done before he finally crashed into my knife. Petter Northug was not present but then I did not really expect him to turn up. A vivid dream after watching too much of Beitostølen ski racing? Nope, an online game the supermarket chain SPAR Norge running off its website since 2015 ( sorry, I know that I should have been able to butter those toasts better by now) Norwegian skiing might be a tad down after the recent doping cases of Sundby and Johaug –…

And Now For Something Completely Different: Nighttime High-Altitude Ski Race That Bans Doublepoling Outright

Newsfeed, Travel & Mass Sport
The Südtirol Moonlight Classic race in Seiser Alm, Italy has a chance to enter the record books for two distinct reasons. First, it is one of the most high-altitude ski races on the planet. The map shows that the highest point of the 30km track is at some 2,050 meters above sea level. The only other mass race with similar top point we could think of is La Sgambeda with its famed Grasso degli Agnelli climb ( sadly, often snowless in early December when the race is held and, therefore, skipped). As a reminder, anything above 1,500 meters is scientifically considered to be high-altitude. At 2,100 m above sea level, the saturation of oxyhemoglobin begins to plummet. There is simply not enough oxygen to help to power human body to do maximum…
