‘Trofeo delle Contrade’, Europe’s First Ski Race of Season

Newsfeed, Travel & Mass Sport
When does competition skiing season start in the Northern Hemisphere? Most people would likely point at the races in Lapland in November – but we say it starts with the ‘Trofeo delle Contrade’ held annually – where else?- in Livigno, Italy. On Friday, August 25th the town high street, via Plan, will once again become one kilometer long skiing stadium - just for the night. Nothing like watching skiers flying down the middle of one of the fanciest shopping streets in the Alpine region, with all those mannequins dressed in top Italian clothing brands in shops' windows for atmosphere. And what of snow? We think Trofeo delle Contrade’ is as much about showing off Livigno's prowess in snowfarming as about anything else. The snow that will be used to set…

There are no easy paths to the Olympic Games yet the one that Sergei Dolidovich of Belarus have chosen appears to be extra tough. By fundraising on online crowdfunding platform the country's best skier for the last quarter of the century ( yes, you read it right) is hoping to gather enough money to qualify for PyeongChang. If successful, the OG 2018 would become the seventh he were to participate in – on par with legendary Ole Einar Bjørndalen who is also in the running ( but without a crowdfunding element in his preps) A 44 year old native of Orsha has been competing internationally since 1994 – including the World Chapmionships in Lahti where he finished respectful 22d in 50km freestyle. Dolidovich career highlights include coming 5th at the same…

Charlotta Kalla, Swedish Ski Federation – And 205.000 Swedish Kronor Between Them

Money & Finance, Newsfeed
The standoff between the Sweden's best skier and the Swedish Ski Federation over bonuses for the last season seems to continue. It also lifts the veil of relative secrecy over rarely discussed system of remuneration in cross skiing at the elite level. It is revealed that the Swedish Ski Federation promised its athletes SEK 150.000 bonus for gold, 60.000 for silver and 30.000 for bronze at the World Championships in Lahti. Charlotta Kalla won silver in 10km race and came 3d in  15 km  skiathlon – as well as being instrumental in winning the silver for Team Sweden in 4 X 5 relay in Lahti this year. That should have made her entitled to SEK 105.000 ( circa EUR 11.000) in bonus money. Except that the Federation is now refusing to…
