Leaders, Newsfeed
The wait is over. The snow skiing season starts this weekend in Östersund, Sweden True, there were already FIS races in the South America and Australia/New Zealand – and there was a traditional Livigno race. But the Swedes got the timing superbly right: end of October, just when millions of skiers the world over start sensing that snow in the air and look longingly at their own stashed away narrow skis. What you need to know about the Östersund Winter Festival: - Will take place 27 to 29 October and culminate with the Sunday's finals - Will be live-televised/streamed by home broadcaster SVT - Stands for 8,000 ( you heard it right – eight thousand! ) spectators were built - "Only” 500 cubic meters of snowfarmed snow will be need…

Skiers And Their Cars: Who Drives What

Skiers And Their Cars: Who Drives What

Newsfeed, Trivia
In the first edition of Ride Like a Skiing Star we introduced you to the favorite vehicles of skiing stars ( or, perhaps, of their sponsors – but it's the same thing, right? ) Since any skier spends much time lugging her/his gear around, the relationship between them is rather tight, intimate we might say. Small wonder that when skiers do not post their snaps with gorgeous snowy mountains as a background – they do so with their rides. Not everyone is there – Alex Harvey of Canada and Sergeey Ustiugov of Russia are both avid car enthusiasts – but good luck finding any photo of them behind the wheel or lovingly hugging their steel horse. Nobody knows what Martin Sundby drives because nobody knows anything about Martin Sundby who…

Ski waxing is risky for your health and if you insist on using fluorinated waxes, you best invest in proper protection. This is the gist of the newly released study conducted by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. The study reveals that amateur skiers using ski wax in booths at competitions are being exposed to the similar ( and dangerous) levels of perfluorinated hydrocarbons as professional ski waxers. The dreaded PFOA or perfluorooctanoate , the most controvercial chemical in the European Union ( comprehensive ban is being discussed but nobody knows how to replace it in electronics' production and firefighting among other areas) is mentioned in the study: The levels of PFOA in waxing cabins are "... three orders of magnitude higher than the concentrations found in house dust from…

You could read the first part here Just to remind you that Andy is anything but your typical sweet-talking start-up guy, trying to please everybody, from investors through competition to the most choosy customer. Far from it – at least when it comes to talking about competition. You're welcome to form your opinion about his bluntness - but we, without taking sides in the argument, plain like it and find it quite refreshing. Today Andy talks about marketing, competition and what he sees as unfair business practices of competitors & what he intends to do about them. It's really worth reading ( and watching the accopaniying videos whereas Andy expounds…

Norway Wants To Ban Fluoride Wax In Youth Skiing But Does Not Know How To Control It

Newsfeed, Travel & Mass Sport
The public opinion battle is raging on in Norway regarding the ban of fluoride waxes in youth sport. The fight for outright 'fluorforbud' is as it's know in Norwegian is led by the activists of the Tøffest uten fluor ( "Toughest Without Fluoride") campaign. The campaign was launched by the two popular ski clubs, Holmen IF Langrenn and Asker Skiklubb, with a strong demand: a complex ban on using fluoride waxes in all the U17 competitions. It's unclear why the age limit is set at 16+ but probably because after that the best skiers start competing internationally where such a ban is not on the horizon, The arguments against flouride could be summed up in two categories: - fluoride waxes, especially high fluoro powders, are extremely expensive - with parents…
