Doublepoling Rebel Who Took On FIS

Leaders, Newsfeed
Magnus Vesterheim is not quite a household name in the skiing world– yet. A 22-year old from Lillehammer, however, is an author a viral sensation, that was (and is) being discussed well after the season is over – and that has potentially wide repercussions for the future of cross country skiing competitions. But first things first. At the meeting a year ago FIS had decreed ( "decided" simply does not sound strong enough to describe the depth) that from now on , race officials, at their sole discretion, may designate clearly marked zones where no doublepoling is allowed during classical cross country skiing races i.e " no DP zones" “All nations agreed that we need to find a way to preserve the classic striding technique within classic skiing” Fasterskier.com then…

Incredible Story of Fern Cates & Her Love of Skiing

Fern Cates' story is one of a kind. A fourteen year old from Bridgnorth, United Kingdom first found out what cross country skiing looks like watching the Vancouver Olympics on TV. UK's Midlands is hardly a sort of place that is natural habitat of a cross country skier – but Fern had made up her mind. It sounds incredible, but it took Ms. Cates only 6 years from the very first 'taster session' on rollerski as a gift for her 15th birthday to becoming a full member of the Senior British Nordic Ski Team . Together with Andrew Musgrave and Andrew Young, among the others, Fern was wearing Team GB colours at the Lahti World Championships earlier this year. Scotland to Stage First Ever Ski World Cup Event

Leaders, Newsfeed, Travel & Mass Sport
Scotland is to get its first taste of elite cross country skiing in the near future, as the FIS conference last week decided to stage a World Cup event there in 2020. "The idea has been there for a while, but now it's determined" Vegard Ulvang, the chairman of the FIS cross-country committee told Norwegian newspaper VG. Hopes for the world's best racers doing laps in Cairngorm National Park are slightly premature – the event will most likely be staged in one of the cities, probably Edinburgh, on artificial snow. "We will produce enough snow for a short track and bring ski sprint to a new country," says Ulvang. Scotland's appearance on the skiing map is totally due to recent successes of Team GB racers and Scottish natives - Andrew…

CAS ( Finally) Issues Verdict on Suspended Russian Skiers

Leaders, Newsfeed
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne has issued a verdict in the arbitration procedures involving six top Russian cross country skiers – Sochi 2014 Olympic champion Alexander Legkov, Falun 2015 World champion Maxim Vylegzhanin as well as Alexey Petukhov, Evgenia Shapovalova, Evgeniy Belov and Julia Ivanova . The decision reads as a big compromise: The CAS have decided to maintain the provisional suspensions imposed on the athletes until 31 October 2017, at the latest. However, "in the absence of any anti-doping rule violation having been assessed against any of the athletes so far, the temporary suspension shall lapse and the athletes shall be allowed to compete again" Yelena Vyalbe, President of the Russian Cross-Country Ski Association, has already reacted on the CAS verdict by saying that all…
