Russians – what gear do they use now

Gear News, Newsfeed
It was interesting to assess what gear the best Russian  skiers use these days. The western sponsors have abandoned them, they say. Or did they? We don't know  and we don't care. Nobody would tell the truth anyway for the risk of wrong kind of PR in these sensitive times. Let's assume that skiers pictured have spent their own hard earned euros to buy the gear they always wanted, shall we? Especially interesting to see who switched away from Swix. The Norwegian company used to have a rare team deal with the Russians, including Juniors. Which,  naturally, turned Russian skis into a total Swix-land, probably 10 out 10 top places in local championships were won on Triacs before.  Not any more though: Alexander Bolshunov is using KV+ Tornado Plus Titan…

First snow laid on world championship tracks of Planica

Newsfeed, Travel & Mass Sport
First snow was laid on the tracks where the 2023 Nordic World Ski Championships will take place. Naturally, not by Mother Nature, but by the good people of Planica Nordic Center. And what did you expect? Says Neža Žerjav from Team Slovenia, who was a dedicated tester of the new track on Friday: " The track was like 1 km in the morning but they are still working. At the end of the day it will be 2,5 km. The snow was fast and the track was compact..." [caption id="attachment_19228" align="alignnone" width="960"] "... just enough to properly feel your tibialis anterior muscles.", laughs a 23 year old Slovenian Olympian.[/caption] Planica is located at the altitude of some 1100m. The weather today: +5 Сelcius, rainy. But snow cannons are on standby…

Arne Idland wants to change World Cup , drastically

Leaders
Arne Idland is а name everyone knows and respects in both  international xcskiing and  biathlon.  In the last decade or so quite a few previously big events in snow sports have withered and faded away from the calendar. The popularity of skiing as pro-sport is declining. Arne's brainchild, however, is totally bucking the trend. Starting as a simple local rollerski race, Blink under Mr.Idnald has developed into a must- attend, must-watch event of the summer. Both for the athletes and spectators,  at least in Norway.    Now Arne Idland publicly proposes for the things to go forward and to incorporate a big summer rollerski event as a part of of the winter, snow World Cup.    When we spoke, Arne avoided naming Blink specifically as a candidate. But it is…

The BLINK Skifestival is back in full strength this year after last two editions hampered but not broken by COVID

Leaders, Newsfeed
The BLINK at the beginning of August is one of those rare stories worth talking about, year after year. Why do we at The Daily Skier pay so much attention to it? Because the competition is evolving, growing in strength, getting more spectators, better sponsorship and more media attention. Because it's the world's first real fusion of xcskiig and biathlon (others are trying to imitate now) Because of its festive, celebratory atmosphere that is difficult to convey unless you are on the ground ( and if you haven't made up your mind about vacations yet, BLINK is on August 3-6 thus year!). In short, BLINK is bluntly showing what a successful cross-country skiing competition should be like, narrow skis or those wheeled. We talked to Arne Idlamd, the guy created…

Valentina Vuerich makes history by signing with Team Norway

Leaders, Newsfeed
Vale is special, there is probably no one else like her on the World Cup circuit: We profiled Ms.Vuerich more than two years ago on dailyskier.com : "..a former athlete herself, Valentina is a lot more than a ski technician. She is a training partner and, judging by amounts of smiles & giggles, one of the close friends to her Team Slovenia athletes…" The Italian specialist was instrumental in success of the Slovenian team in the recent years - but this month Valentina has signed a contract with none less than Team Norway. Thus becoming, we believe, the first foreign female ski specialist with them. She would be primarily responsible for making sure the skis of Heidi Weng, Julie Myhre and Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget are flying in every race. We…
